Side Gate System, also known as "mould base with single parting face", has a dimension range from 150mm x 150mm (1515 series) to 600mm x 800 mm (6080 series). In this system, A plate, B plate, stripper plate and support plate can vary, forming four combinations, namely A, B, C and D. According to the different structures of clamping slot, it can be further divided into 3 categories, I type, H type and T type. Therefore, in total there are 12 models available in this system. The system offers a choice of different plate thickness to suit designers' application requirements.
Moulds using side gate system are often called two-plate moulds. Runners and gates are designed in a way that they are on the same parting line. Mould design is simple, with low tooling cost and short lead time, making Side Gate System a favourite within the mould making industry. There are 2 disadvantages with two-plate mould designs - obvious gate mark on product and need to seperate running from product.
Pin Point Gate System
Pin-point Gate System, also known as "double or multiple parting-face mould base" has a dimension range from 200mm x 250mm (2025 series) to 500mm x 700mm (5070 series). Compared with the Side Gate System, the Pin-point Gate System has 4 more support pins and 1 more stripper plate to control the opening and closing actions of the mould. Pin-point Gate System is divided into two sub-systems, D and E, (with and without stripper plate). Similar to the Side gate system, it can be further categorized into 4 types, A, B, C and D, depending on the plates combination. There are two types of clamping slot structure (I and H). Taking all combinations into account, there are 16 models available.
Moulds using Pin-point Gate System are often called three-plate moulds. Runners and gates are designed such that they are located on different parting lines. Product is released from one parting face whilst the runner is released from another parting face next to the stripper plate. Products' appearance is better than those produced using Side Gate System, with no further work required for runner seperation. Due to the extra stripper plate and different open/close mechanism, mould design is generally more complicated, resulting in higher tooling cost and lead time.
Three Plate Type System
Three Plate Type System (often called double or multiple parting-face mould base) is a simplified version of pin point gate system, with dimension ranging from 150mm x 150mm (1515 series) to 500mm x 700mm (5070 series). Unlike the Pin Point Gate system, Three Plate Type System does not have the four support pins. In addition, the standard guide pins on A/B plates are replaced with 4 longer guide pins which extend through the stripper plate to the spacer block. Three Plate Type System is divided into two sub-systems, F and G (with and without stripper plate). As there is no stripper plate between A/B plates, so there are only two types available (A and C). 2 clamping slot types are available (I and H). In total there are 8 models available.
Moulds using Three Plate Type System are often called three-plate moulds. In terms of functions, Three Plate Type System is similar to Pin-point Gate System, with runners and gates located on different parting lines. Therefore, product and gates are released on seperate parting faces. The advantages are similar to that of Pin-point Gate System. The less complex mould base structure permits greater flexibility in mould design, and in general lower tooling cost.
Standard Mould Base For Die Casting
For a long time there have been no standard mould bases available for die casting mould makers. Die casting mould makers have no alternatives but to purchase custom-made mould bases or to modify Side Gate System mould bases. In view of this, LKM has launched mould bases in various dimensions suitable for die-casting moulds. These special mould bases are suitable for die-casting moulds used on cold chamber die-casting machines from 160 tons up to 500 tons, satisfying the demands for time and cost efficiencies.
